In 1985 they started producing the 'Jazz Bass Special' labeled Fender as you can see on the headstock of this. In 1984 they made a bass called simply the 'PJ bass' that looked similar to this but without a 3 way switch and some other oddities. Japan started producing Fenders in the early 80s.
I have another black one of these, its my main bass, its more beat up and modified so im keeping that one and passing this on.
